  Prepositions of place/directions

·         Around (Let’s walk around the corner)
·         In (Let’s meet in the mall)
·         Into (Enter into the classroom)
·         Through (You cannot go through this bridge, it is dangerous)
·         Down (Let’s go down Paulista Avenue for a walk)
·         Across from (The school is across from a gym)
·         Next to (The school is next to Mc Donald’s)
·         Near (The school is near the bus stop)

  Verbs in -ing

After the following verbs:
       Enjoy (I enjoy reading)
       Dislike (I dislike working on Saturdays)
       Finish (I finished studying for today)
       Mind (I don’t mind doing the dishes)
       Hate (I hate waking up early)
       Feel like (I feel like going to the movies)
       Stop (I stopped watching this TV show)
       Quit ( I quit smoking)

After prepositions:
       At (I am good at dancing)
       After (I slept after arriving home)
       By (You can improve your English by using the Internet)
       On (We need to keep on studying)
       Of (I am thinking of leaving you) *it is usually “think of”/(about is also possible, but there is a different use)
  • About (Talk about learning English)
  • Without (I can’t live without eating chocolate)
Used as a noun:
       At the beginning of the sentence
(Studying is good for you)
(Eating vegetables is healthy)


  Verbs in infinitive form

After these verbs:
       Agree (I agree to study more)
       Decide ( I decided to travel to Canada)
       Help (I helped you to study)
       Hope (I hope to get a good grade)
       Want (I want to talk to you)
       Would like (I would like to buy a pizza)
       Stop ( I stopped to buy the newspaper before arriving home)
       Try (Try not to sleep late)

 Modal verbs:
Obligations
       You must speak English in the class
       You have to study everyday
Prohibition
       You mustn’t arrive late
       You cannot smoke in the class
Optional
       You don’t have to wear a uniform
       You can use an on-line dictionary

  Modifiers
       I am extremely in love with Leonardo
       I am really in love with Leonardo
       I am very in love with Leo
       I am fairly in love with Leo
       I am a (little) bit in love with Leo
       I am not very in love with Leonardo DiCaprio
       I am not in love with Leo
